Creative block feels like staring at a blank white wall that refuses to talk back. In Procreate, the wall is even brighter, glowing at you, daring you to make the first move. Some days you swipe it closed and pretend you’ll try again later. Other days you just sit there, stuck in the swamp of your own head.

For me, the block usually comes in two flavors. First: perfectionism. That little voice whispering “this better be amazing” before I’ve even drawn a line. It kills me before I start. Second: fatigue. Honestly, sometimes it’s not a block at all — I’m just tired, but I call it a block to make myself feel less guilty about not creating.

Procreate helps, but it also hurts. Helps because the tools make mistakes less scary (undo, layers, blending). Hurts because the infinite options can overwhelm you. Sometimes scrolling through brushes is just procrastination in disguise. It looks like work, but really you’re avoiding the canvas.

The trick I’ve found? Lower the stakes. Do something small and stupid. A ten-minute doodle. A quick portrait where you don’t care if it looks like the person. Even a page of scribbles. The block breaks when you stop asking the art to carry the weight of your identity.

I remember once, I was stuck for weeks. Couldn’t make anything I liked. Then, out of frustration, I opened Procreate, picked a brush at random, and just scribbled shapes like a child. I hated it at first, but by the end I found a line that looked interesting — I followed it, and it became the seed of a new brush set. That never would’ve happened if I had kept trying to “make something good.”

If you’re blocked right now, here’s a game: pick the ugliest brush you own, the one you’d never use in a final piece. Draw with it for five minutes. No erasing. No goal. Just noise. You might not make art, but you’ll shake the mud out of your gears. And that’s all a block is: sticky gears.
